My Cup of Tea (Sea Buckthorn Fever)

My Cup of Tea (Sea Buckthorn Fever)

Back in high school, my love for history was fed by many but especially by one teacher. Her knowledge spanned millennia and she shared it with us through literature, music, art, her stories, and even food. Ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, and more.

Winter is Coming: the Persephone

Winter is Coming: the Persephone

Who tells the stories? Legend has it that the Greek god of the Underworld, Hades, desired the young Persephone, goddess of Spring. So he asked his brother, Zeus, if he could have her as his ”bride”. Will it surprise you to know that Persephone was

As always, it began with coffee and seeds.

A few years ago, I started a “Paired Up” musical playlist and it still remains on active rotation. The list’s theme is how two songs, regardless of genre, time, language, or geography, can be connected. Maybe one is straightforward such as a newer cover of

New York City ~ A City of Tall Dreams

New York City ~ A City of Tall Dreams

I was recently in New York City, surrounded by tall buildings reaching towards the sky. I felt a sense of excitement while standing and looking up to the tops of the buildings. I also loved being on the rooftops, where one can see the entire

Samurai at The High Museum

Samurai at The High Museum

Occasionally, I will enter a space and know immediately that what is in store will be extraordinary. That was the case when I first entered the exhibition, “Samurai”, which is currently at the High. With the exhibition being displayed in several adjoining galleries, each room that I entered rose in uniqueness, interest, beauty and grandeur. There was something mystical about viewing the garments and accessories worn so many centuries ago by the celebrated warriors.

Bottom line is that I loved it. At this point, I’m yearning for a return trip to Japan!

The exhibition will be showing at The High until September 17th. Let us know how you enjoyed it if you have an opportunity to visit.

About the Collectors

How the High Describes the Exhibition:

Samurai Armor from the Collection of Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller features one of the most important collections of samurai armor outside of Japan. Through a dazzling array of more than one hundred fifty helmets, swords, and other objects spanning almost nine centuries, including nearly twenty complete sets of armor, the exhibition will illuminate the exceptionally high level of design and craft dedicated to these elaborate instruments of ceremony and combat. These objects reveal the culture, lifestyle, and artistic legacy associated with the samurai warrior in Japanese society. The High is the first museum in the Southeastern United States to present this exhibition, which has traveled to cities around the world.”

Labor

Labor

During my three-month artist residency in Pullman at the mosnart visiting artist project, I challenged myself to be leisurely in a neighborhood defined by labor. I posed questions to myself: do we value labor over leisure? Has leisure become labor? Must we produce perpetually? Do

Pleasure Principle

Pleasure Principle

Whether it’s chatting over drinks, laughing between a spoonful of Hawaiian ice, delving deeply over the most exquisite dishes or tasting everything our world has to offer, I love being with my parents. Recently, we hit the ground running. Well, that’s what we always do.

Onion Dip for Breakfast at the Beyoncé concert!

Onion Dip for Breakfast at the Beyoncé concert!

Unlike any other concert that I’ve attended, Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour Concert seemed to be as much about her fans and those who attended, as it was about her. Perhaps, it’s like the song goes, “We Are One”.  Her fans identify with her.

As we entered the massive Mercedes Benz Stadium where Beyoncé filled to capacity on three nights, excitement was in the air. It was a sight to behold: so many people dressed and super-hyped for the occasion.  I wished that I had arrived earlier so that I could have sat down and watched the fashion show as the concertgoers arrived in Beyoncé-like attire: sequins, glitter, fishnets, silver hats, booty shorts, and every kind of edgy fashion that you could imagine. The outfits were confidently worn. That evening, I gained a better understanding of ‘The Beyhive’.

The performance was outstanding. I had anticipated a show deliberate in delivering excellence in every aspect: highlighting Beyoncé, costumes, dancers, sound system, music selection, various stage sets. The show was fabulous! Beyoncé was superb. She rocked the night away.  So much so that I may follow her to another city to see all of this unfold again. Next time, I’ll get there earlier and take photos of the fashion show put on by the Beyhive!

R & R

R & R

Sometimes we want to pack in so much goodness that we find ourselves running. We most definitely experienced that this weekend. As we idly drank cold drinks and looked beyond the pool to the lovely lake, I thought of the historic Chowan Beach in North
