Best of Atlanta

Best of Atlanta

I was born and raised in Atlanta and I say that with an abundance of pride. I am what we playfully call a “Grady baby”, which references Grady Memorial Hospital where the majority of African American babies at the time were born. I love Atlanta

Sharing at the Table

Sharing at the Table

Last Saturday, after a long day of exploring the city, we sat down with friends for dinner at C&S Seafood & Oyster Bar in Atlanta. The lights were perfectly dimmed, service was excellent, and there was joy and excitement in the air. Everyone enjoyed their entrees and since we were celebrating a special occasion, we decided to order an abundance of desserts.

The sweets were brought to the table with fanfare and were lit with candles. Sharing the desserts at the table was so much fun. Tasting them all allowed us to double the pleasure, triple the delight, and on and on.

We enjoyed them communally. What came to mind as we sat around the table were all of the intangibles that we have: laughter and a common history built upon familiarity. We shared our mutual love and well wishes for each other. More important than the food, we touched on our hopes and dreams for beautiful tomorrows and gratitude that particular day and the days gone by.

Cheers everyone!

The Obama Portraits at the High Museum of Art

Last week we were able to view the Obama Portraits Exhibition at the High Museum of Art. It was such an awesome experience. Each time that I visit the High, I think of how lucky Atlanta is to have a world-class museum. Looking around, there

Remembrances Of Love

Remembrances Of Love

What can bring more joy than giving or receiving valentines? Such was the case on this cold and wintry recent Valentine’s Day, when I opened the front door to see red roses and fruit had been delivered. As the day progressed, thoughts of past Valentine’s Days came to mind. Memories flooded back to the times that my father stood at the door with flowers in hand and the biggest smile imaginable. I thought of Valentine cards given to me by my parents fifty plus years ago which I bring out on days like this to remind me of their love. There’s another card from them for their grandbaby-to-be, Erika, who was born just a few months after Valentine’s Day. I reminisce about my brother, Haywood, who now many years later surprises me with roses at my door. His smile brings joy to my heart and love to my spirit.

This 54 year old Valentine card is musical. Wind it up and it plays ”Love is a Many Splendid Thing”.

I made this ”I’ll Put a Spell on You” card for Darrell on our very first Valentine’s Day celebrated as a married couple in 1968. We were still teenagers. It seems like just yesterday but it was almost a lifetime ago.

Valentine‘s Day 2022 included roses and mangoes, one of my favorite fruits, from family. The sweet smell of the flowers permeates the air and their beauty grace the day.

The game starts at 6:30 in the evening, yet in my excitement, I wake up in the wee hours of the morning. I hurry to the kitchen to start preparing for our game-day festivities. Never mind that it’ll be just the two of us, it’s

Remembering Our trip While Watching the 2022 Australian Open

Australia, the Land Down Under, had been a destination that I desired to visit ever since Oprah took over 300 of her ”ultimate viewers” there years ago. In 2016, our immediate family (seven of us, three generations) was fortunate to explore far-away Australia. Rising out

Just Lovely

Just Lovely

As I look at this vase of roses in my kitchen, I contemplate how lovely they are. I think about how much pleasure a simple bouquet of flowers can bring. As I delve deeper in thought, I remember how much I like this vase and how long ago I purchased it. I look at the lamp in the background and remember my husband carrying two of them through the airport terminals in both Argentina and Atlanta. My eyes fall on the china cabinet which houses some of my much-loved and used crystal.

Although the kitchen is not normally thought of as a room where beautiful objects reside, it is indeed a place where one can feed the soul. The alluring and fascinating pieces that bring to mind joyous times, recollections of the past, the wonder of nature as in the roses, and all sorts experiences that just the thought brings smiles to our hearts and faces.

The kitchen is often thought of being the heart of the home.

Do you have photos or memories of days and moments when you are gloriously happy? This photo captures such a moment for me. There are very few places that I enjoy being more than outside, feeling breezes, gazing at the ocean as the tides roll
