This year has been quite an interesting one; if nothing else, there’s been an abundance. Every day has included a warm exchange with people who hope, dream, and work for a beautiful present and future. We remain in awe.

The Black Garden has been generous, too. In addition to reminding us of those who came before us, it has given example after example of beautiful and delicious fruits of our labor.

I am continuing my time on the farm as we develop this arts residency for the visual, performing, literary, and culinary artists. Why do people feel welcome? How precious is trust? The questions my 18-year old self asked then are the same ones I asked during my yearlong residency at the Smart Museum a decade ago… and now as I watch sunflowers and amaranth dance in the wind.

🔪: This savory galette has the tenderest crust flavored and tinted by saffron. Think Mediterranean flavors and golden light. Its base has garden herbs and a secret ingredient that soaks up all the juices to make a delicate filling. Our garden onions are ever so sweet and ideal companions of the juiciest tomatoes. There are Queen of the Night, Paul Robeson, Amalfi Orange, and both the sweet and tart.

As you may remember, Barcelona is one of ODB’s favorite places. While we’ve both been there separately, we were lucky to spend some mom-daughter time together one Mother’s Day.

Sometimes when it’s quite hot outside, I will think back to 1997 and us walking around Giza. That’s us on the right in khakis, light colors, and hats: ODB (mom and daughter), dad, brother, and husband.

We rode camels and horses while marveling at the pyramids. Going inside one was one of two highlights; the other was being together.
